THE TROUBLE WITH TIKTOK

How to set up TikTok

The Sun Newspaper in London has issued a stark investigation about TikTok, suggesting it is completely unfit for purpose for children, whilst the article is poorly written, there is a strong grain of truth in it. TikTok has grown hugely since its former life ad Music.ly. Now known as TikTok and in Chinese ownership for the last two year.

The problem is quite simple. TikTok’s minimum age is 13, Tiktok does nothing during the sign-up process to check  - meaning huge numbers of children join below the required age with no legal protection. TikTok also serves adverts and recommendations which may not be suitable for children. Families will find it is difficult to contact TikTok to get videos taken down.

Even truthful 13-year-olds are then given an option to make their accounts public.

  • 34% of kids will experience cyberbullying as kids
  • Girls are twice as likely to be the victims of cyberbullying.
  • Victims of cyberbullying have a higher risk of depression, even compared to victims of traditional bullying face to face.
  • Children are 7 times more likely to be cyberbullied by friends than by strangers.
  • Children who are bullied are 9 times more likely to be the victim of identity fraud as well
