Interview with Michael Conway

Graham Mulhern chats with Michael Conway, CEO of Renaissance in Ireland, about NIST, DORA, Ransomware and the continued cybersecurity threats in 2025. We mention BullWall, one of the leading protection suites for ransomware. We also talk about the Renaissance acquisition last year by Northamber PLC in the UK.

Ransomware, NIST

Ransomware protection is important NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) due to the threat and potential consequences of such an attack. Ransomware can encrypt an organisation's data, disrupt operations, and demand payment for restoration, posing a significant risk to critical infrastructure and national security.

NIST has developed comprehensive frameworks and guidelines to combat ransomware, emphasising its importance. The NIST Cybersecurity Framework Profile for Ransomware Risk Management (NIST IR 8374) provides a structured approach to identify, protect, detect, respond to, and recover from ransomware events. This framework helps organisations assess their readiness and prioritize security improvements.

By focusing on ransomware protection, NIST aims to enhance the resilience of both public and private sector entities. The framework addresses critical aspects such as incident response planning, backup strategies, user awareness, and vulnerability management. These measures minimise the impact of attacks and the maintaining the integrity of sensitive data and systems.

Furthermore, NIST's emphasis on ransomware protection reflects the evolving nature of cyber threats. As ransomware attacks become more sophisticated and frequent, NIST's guidance serves as a vital resource against potential risks and safeguards their assets.
